          Who elects the president?

November 7,2000 is a very special day in the United States. Voters all across the nation are 1 representatives in local and national races. Some people think that they're voting for the president of the country, too. They're not! Again, they're voting for 2 . These representatives are called electors(有選舉權(quán)的人). They are part of a system called the Electoral College(總統(tǒng)選舉團).

In most states the electors are chosen on a winner take-all basis. That makes it possible for one candidate(候選人) to win the most electors while getting less popular votes nationally than his 3 .

The electors will meet in their respeetive(各自的) states and cast their votes for president and vice-president on December 18,2000. The Constitution(憲法) does not 4 the electors to vote for the candidates that they are pledged to, but they almost always do. On January 6,2001, just two weeks 5 the new president and vice-president take office, the votes will be counted in Congress.

If no one gets a majority (more than half) of the electoral votes, at least 270 out of 538, the 6 will be chosen by Congress. The House of Representatives will choose (one vote per state) the 7 and the Senate will choose the vice-president. It's not likely, but we could actually end up with a president from one party and a vice-president from another.

In an extremely close election, all kinds of strange outcomes are 8 . Will the 9 that most voters prefer be the next 10 ? And when will we even know?

          Cyber Step-Mother
I’ve often felt “step-parent” is a label  (標簽 )we attach to whoever marries into families where children already exist. At  36   that’s how I feel about  37    a step-mother to my husband’s four children.

When the children moved to a town five hours   43   , my husband was depressed. In order to    44   regular communication with the kids, we send e-mails. However, if a computer message came  45   to “Dad”, I’d feel forgotten and  46    . If my name appeared along with his, it would make me feel like I was part of their family unit  47   .
Late one evening, as I was checking my e-mail, an “instant message” appeared on the   48  . It was Margo, who was also sitting in front of her computer five hours away. We sent several messages back and forth,   49    the latest news. When we would “chat” like that, she wouldn’t  50   know if it was me or her dad. That night, she didn’t ask and I didn’t identify myself either. At about 11, I commented that I should go to sleep. Her return message  51   , “Okay, talk to you later! Love you!”
As I read this message, a wave of   52   ran through me and I realized that she  53   she was talking with her father. Feeling  54   for not identifying myself, yet not wanting to embarrass her, I simply responded, “Love you too! Good night!”
I felt again the sharp (劇烈的) ache of emptiness (空虛) and otherness. Then, as I was  55  to leave, Margo’s final message appeared, reading “Tell Dad good night for me too.” With tears filled eyes, I turned the machine off.

My name is Amy. I’m a 25-year-old graduate student who likes yoga, home-decorating shows and eating spoonfuls of peanut butter   1  from the jar. Oh yeah, and I’m an iPhone addict.

I wasn’t always an addict. In fact, for many years I told myself I didn’t want a   2       cellphone. They seemed like too much work, always beeping, ringing and   3  attention. I was   4  content with my simple antique (古董,此處指舊手機), and I didn’t expect to change my mind any time soon.

However, about a year ago, I found myself envious of all those proud iPhone owners, cradling their shiny new phones and   5  all their friends. I started listening secretly to conversations about “iPhone apps”, feeling like a   6  listening to a language I couldn’t speak.

Eventually I couldn’t   7  my iPhone instinct (本能) any longer, and I welcomed my new iPhone into my life.

To my surprise, I suddenly found myself with a whole new circle of friends. They   8     my iPhone-related inquiries when my other friends couldn’t, and didn’t   9  when I bragged about (吹噓) all the things little Eloise (yes, I named her) could do.

Okay, so I was addicted to my iPhone.

I decided   16  had to be done. But, as I quickly realized, iPhones are like   17  and not easy to quit.

Then, while taking the bus to work one day, I was   18  forced to quit—at least   19 . She was so hot that I dropped her immediately back into my bag. When I picked her up again, she was gone.
