BUKHANNON, West Virginia- Two rescue teams slowly moved along a two-mile path in Monday
night to the site of a coal mine explosion that trapped 13 miners, who had not been heard from since the
          early morning accident.
Meanwhile, at a nearby church, more than 250 family members and friends gathered, waiting for
          updates(最新報道) on the rescuers' progress.
The miners were trapped at about 6:30 a.m. and many families weren't informed of the accident until
about 10 a.m.-more than three hours after it happened. "It's very upsetting, but you've got to be patient, I
guess," said John Helms, whose brother, Terry, was trapped in the mine.
The trapped miners were about 260 feet underground and about 10000 feet from the Sago Mine's
entrance, said Roger Nicholson, general counsel from International Coal Group.
At a late night news conference, Nicholson said one team had advanced about 4800 feet in the four
hours since entering the mine just before 6 p.m. Another team entered the mine about 30 minutes later.
He said the crew was very experienced, with some members having worked underground for 30 to 35
years. The miners were equipped with about one hour of breathable oxygen each. The company has not
released the names of the miner.
The teams test the air about every 500 feet, and have to disconnect (remove) the power to the phones
they use to communicate with the surface before doing that. "We don't want to be energizing anything if it's
in an atmosphere with burnable gases," Kips said.
The cause of the explosion was not immediately known. High level of carbon monoxide were detected
shortly after the explosion, which delayed rescue efforts, but those levels have since subsided(減退),
          authorities said.
          1. According to the passage, we can infer that _____.
          A. all the miners who were trapped underground were still alive
          B. communication with the trapped miners was cut off
          C. the two rescue teams entered the mine at the same time
          D. the rescue started as soon as the accident happened
          2. If the first team advanced at an average speed, they could dig about _____ per hour.
          A. 1000 feet
          B. 2400 feet
          C. 1200 feet
          D. 4800 feet
          3. Where can the passage be seen?
          A. In a magazine.
          B. In a newspaper.
          C. In a science book.
          D. In an advertisement.

Imagine, one day, getting out of bed in Beijing and being at your office in Shanghai in only a couple of
hours, and then, after a full day of work, going back home to Beijing and having dinner there.
Sounds unusual, doesn't it? But it's not that unrealistic, with the development of China's highspeed
railway system. And that's not all.China has an even greater highspeed railway plan-to connect the country with Southeast Asia, and eventually Eastern Europe.
China is negotiating to extend its own highspeed railway network to up to 17 countries in 10 to 15
years, eventually reaching London and Singapore.
China has proposed three such projects. The first would possibly connect Kunming with Singapore
via Vietnam and Malaysia.Another could start in Urumqi and go through Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, and possibly to Germany. The third would start in the northeast and go north through Russia and then into Western Europe.
If China's plan for the highspeed railway goes forward, people could zip over from London to Beijing in under two days.
The new system would still follow China's highspeed railway standard. And the trains would be able to
go 346 kilometers an hour, almost as fast as some airplanes.
China's bullet train (高速客車), the one connecting Wuhan to Guangzhou, already has the world's
fastest average speed. It covers 1,069 kilometers in about three hours.
Of course, there are some technical challenges to overcome. There are so many issues that need to be
settled, such as safety, rail gauge (軌距), maintenance of railway tracks. So,it's important to pay attention to every detail.
But the key issue is really money.China is already spending hundreds of billions of yuan on domestic
          railway expansion.
China prefers that the other countries pay in natural resources rather than with capital investment.
Resources from those countries could stream into China to sustain development.
It'll be a winwin project. For other countries, the railway network will definitely create more
opportunities for business, tourism and so on, not to mention the better communication among those
          countries.
For China, such a project would not only connect it with the rest of Asia and bring some muchneeded resources, but would also help develop China's far west.We foresee that in the coming decades, millions of people will migrate to the western regions, where the land is empty and resources unused. With highspeed
trains, people will set up factories and business centers in the west once and for all.And they'll trade with
Central Asian and Eastern European countries.
1.China's new highspeed railway plan will be a winwin project because________.
A.China will get muchneeded resources and develop its western regions
B.China and the countries involved will benefit from the project in various ways
C.China will develop its railway system and communication with other countries
D.the foreign countries involved will develop their railway transportation, business and tourism
2.According to the passage, the greatest challenge to the new highspeed railway plan is________.
          A.technical issues
          B.safety of the system
          C.financial problems
          D.maintenance of railway tracks
3.Which of the following words best describes the author's attitude towards China's highspeed railway
                plan?
          A.Critical.
          B.Reserved.
          C.Doubtful.
          D.Positive.

The high-protein, low-carbohydrate (碳水化合物) diets many people turn to for weight loss might have
potentially harmful long-term effects on the colon, a small study indicates.
In the study, UK researchers found that a protein-heavy, low-carb diet created certain changes in the colon
that could contribute to colon cancer risk The study itself does not show whether high-protein diets really raise
the risk of any colon diseases, but the findings raise that possibility.
Diets relatively high in protein and lower in carbs have been shown to help heavy people lose weight. "People
should not be discouraged from losing weight," Dr Flint said. However, he added, they should make sure that
any weight loss plan includes adequate amounts of fiber and a high protein intake over months to years might
have ill effects on the colon.
The findings are based on 17 overweight men who followed three short-term diets: a one-week menu plan
to keep their weight; a four-week high-protein diet with reasonable amounts of carbohydrates; and a four-week
          high-protein diet low in carbs.
On average, the study found when the men were on the high-protein diets, they had higher levels of
substances known as N-nitroso compounds (亞硝基化合物) and other metabolites (代謝物) that have been
linked to cancer. And when they were on the high-protein, low-carb diet, they had lowered amounts of fiber-
originated compounds thought to be protective against cancer.
Exactly what those changes might mean for a person's health is not clear. But Flint said that the findings
suggest that people should be cautious about consuming too much protein and too little fiber over a long period.
In general, experts recommend that adults get about 28 grams of fiber per day-though it's not known whether
          that's enough for someone on a high-protein weight-loss diet.

The Kingdome in Seattle was destroyed on March 26,2000. It was taken down to make room for a
new stadium. The blast(爆破)from the falling building caused the earth to shake as if an earthquake had
          happened.
Scientists placed more than 200 earthquake recorders in the earth to measure the movement. They
found which parts of the city shook the most. This information helped them know which parts of the city
would be damaged in a real earthquake at an early time.
A real earthquake happened on February 28, 2001 in Seattle. The Nisqually earthquake was 6.8 on
the Richter scale(里氏). It damaged the same parts of Seattle that scientists had predicted from the pulling down of the Kingdome. It was a plate quake. It started deep in the earth, 37 miles below the surface on
the Juan de Fuca Plate. Sometimes, huge plates under the earth cause earthquakes when the plates move
          against each other suddenly.
Scientists have learned that deep earthquakes have very few aftershocks. The Nisqually earthquake
had only 4 ones. Another earthquake in California that was close to the surface had over 120 aftershocks. Scientists do not know why the deep earthquakes have fewer aftershocks.
Scientists plan to blast in the ground near Seattle with the purpose of testing the plate. The
shockwaves from the blast will jump off the plate and give them all idea of where the plate is and how it
is moving. This will give them more information in case another real earthquake hits the area.
          1. What will happen after a deep earthquake according to the scientists?
          A. There will be very few aftershocks
          B. There will be many aftershocks.
          C. There will be little damage.
          D. The Richter scale of the quakes will be 6.8 or more.
          2. According to the passage,                 have the most aftershocks.
          A. deep earthquakes
          B. shockwave earthquakes
          C. earthquakes more than 6.8 Richter scale
          D. earthquakes close to the surface
          3. By studying the blast in the ground near Seattle, scientists hope to              .
          A. destroy the Kingdome
          B. find out how many plates there are in the ground there

A British train station has put up a no kissing sign to stop lovers going full steam ahead with their
          overamorous farewells.

Commuters have been told:if you want to get up to that kind of business,do it in the car park.
The sign has been put up at the dropoff point (落客處) at Warrington Bank Quay station in the town of Warrington, between Liverpool and Manchester in northwest England.
A similar sign, this time permitting kissing, has been put up elsewhere in a zone where kissing is considered
          tolerable.
"We have not banned kissing in the station," said a spokesman for operators Virgin Rail.
"But we have put the sign up at the dropoff point because it is not a very big area and it often gets busy.
The sign is a lighthearted way of reminding people to move on quickly. If people wish to spend a little
more time with their loved ones before they leave, then they should park in the shortstay car park nearby."
The busy station links the town with the major cities London,Birmingham,Glasgow,Edinburgh,Liverpool

BEIJING - After a night of wining and dining with 50 of China's richest people, Warren Buffet and
Bill Gates told the journalists on Thursday that the biggest difference between eating with Chinese
tycoons (企業(yè)界大亨) and Western ones was the food.
"I was amazed last night, really, at how similar the questions and discussions and all that were to those
in the dinners we had in the U.S.," said Mr. Buffett.
Mr. Buffett and Mr. Gates, two of the best known Westerners here, announced in September, 2010
that they planned to invite 50 wealthy Chinese tycoons to dinner in Beijing to encourage philanthropy (慈善事業(yè)) among China's new rich.
On Thursday, the two men pronounced the dinner a great success, saying that two-thirds of those
invited had shown up, and that more than half of them had offered their own ideas on how Chinese
          philanthropy should work.
The guest list wasn't made public, but the Chinese news media reported that it included Jet Li, the
movie star; Niu Gensheng, the founder of a Chinese dairy business; and Pan Shiyi and Zhang Xin, who
control the SOHO China real estate (房地產(chǎn)) empire.
As with four earlier dinners held in the United States, Mr. Buffett and Mr. Gates said, no one at the
Beijing event was asked to donate money or to promise to engage in charity. "Bill and I won't be calling
anybody. What happens in China will depend on what the Chinese people feel about a project of this
          sort," said Mr. Buffett.
China is widely reported to be second only to the United States in the number of dollar billionaires.
Mr. Gates and Mr. Buffett said the nation was unique because its wealthy class had arisen almost wholly
in the past 30 years, so the philanthropic practices established among European and American dynasties
are new here, and open to change.
The two said the dinner wasn't a long planned matter, but an offshoot (衍生事物) of a trip that Mr.
Buffett had already scheduled to Guangdong and Hunan Provinces, where BYD Company, a maker of
clean-energy automobiles, has factories. Mr. Buffett's company, Berkshire Hathaway, holds a 10%
          stake (股金) in the company.
But Mr. Gates suggested that their philanthropic trip wasn't yet over. "We may do an event in India,"
          he said.

          1. What is the text mainly about?

             A. A brief analysis of future philanthropy.
             B. The development of Chinese philanthropy.
             C. An introduction on Mr. Buffett and Mr. Gates' trip in China.
             D. A charity dinner held in Beijing by Mr. Buffett and Mr. Gates.

          2. According to the first two paragraphs, Mr. Buffett really wanted to say that _____.

             A. the dinner was quite a success
             B. the food in the dinner was very delicious
             C. Chinese tycoons are similar to Western ones
             D. it was pleasing to discuss with Chinese tycoons

          3. We can learn from the text that __________.

             A. China has the largest number of dollar billionaires in Asia
             B. many people have promised to donate money at dinner
             C. Beijing will be the last stop of their philanthropic trip
             D. the Chinese news media published the complete guest list of the dinner

including Baltimore and Philadelphia, which is still extending into New Jersey and New York. It would
pile on to the 32 inches of snow that fell in suburban Washington in the biggest snowfall to hit the city
          in decades.
The Office of Personnel Management announced on Monday evening that Federal Government
Offices in the Washington area would be closed on Tuesday. Emergency employees were expected
to report for work in time, but non-emergency employees were excused. The Federal Government
was closed on Monday, though President Barack Obama still held meetings at the White House.
Schools and most businesses in the region also were shut.
In the county, about 80,000 people lost power on Saturday, and some customers still had no
electricity or heat on Monday. Many schools said classes would be canceled through Tuesday, even
          before the latest storm warning.
On Monday, winter sunshine bathed the nation's capital and the surrounding region, where people
dug out their driveways and sidewalks to finally start to clear streets in some residential neighborhoods.
Bus service on Monday was limited to just a small number of routes in the Washington, D.C.
Cold and snow blanketed much of the central United States this winter, slowing weight gain in cattle
and pigs, delaying livestock(牲畜)sales, and increasing feed costs for producers.
The new storm might also hit the Northeast, the nation's largest market for heating fuel. The weekend
          blast largely bypassed that region.

          閱讀理解。
LONDON: What could possibly be wrong with planting trees? The benefits are obvious; they
firm the soil, take in extra water and take carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. However, it now
turns out that planting trees could add to global warming.
Tree roots do a great job of keeping soil firmly on the ground and out of the wind's power. The
problem is that some of those dust clouds play an important part in soaking up carbon dioxide.
Huge dust storms blow out over the oceans from dry parts of North Africa and central Asia.
Tons of dust are lifted as a thin film over the oceans surface. The dust fuels oceanic life.
Dust from China is carried east and left in the Pacific Ocean. If a tree-planting program there is
successful and the dust supply reduced, the net result may be that less carbon dioxide gets locked
          away in the ocean.
Andy Ridgwell, an environmental scientist from the University of East Anglia, has spent the past
few years studying dust and says his work "shows clearly the complexity of the system and the
importance of not tinkering (粗劣地修補) with it without understanding the results. For this reason
the need is to focus on cutting carbon dioxide giving off rather than monkeying (瞎弄) about with the
          land surface."
An American scientist, Robert Jackson, has shown that when native grassland areas are invaded
(侵入) by trees, carbon is lost from the soil. "We are studying why the soil carbon disappears, but
one theory is that trees do a lot more of their growing above ground compared to grasses, so less
carbon goes directly into the soil from trees." says Jackson.
In wet areas of the world, the gain from trees absorbing carbon dioxide above ground seems to
be outweighed by the loss of carbon from the soil below ground. Countries that plan to combat global
warming by planting trees may have to think again.
Solutions to environmental problems are often more complex than they first appear, and
understanding the Earth's climate is a very great challenge.
          1. According to this report, dust from storms can do the following except ________.
          A. harm the earth's climate
          B. take in carbon dioxide
          C. feed the life in the ocean
          D. keep carbon dioxide locked in the ocean
          2. Andy Ridgwell believes that _____________.
          A. dust plays a more important part than trees
          B. trees shouldn't have been planted in the past
          C. carbon dioxide is harmful to everything on the earth
          D. environmental problems are far less simple than expected
          3. Robert Jackson's experiment proves that ____________.
          A. grassland areas should be covered by forests
          B. carbon can turn grass into dust
          C. trees hold more carbon than grasses
          D. less carbon can make trees grow faster
          4. The underlined word "combat" in the last but one paragraph means ________________.
          A. learn about
          B. live with
          C. fight against
          D. give up
